Russia abandons strategically important Snake Island in Black Sea

Russian troops announced on Thursday (June 30) that they had withdrawn troops from Snake Island, which was occupied early in the invasion, abandoning the strategic Black Sea outpost. This is a major victory for Ukraine and could ease Russia's clampdown on Ukrainian grain exports.

Reuters reported that the Russian Defense Ministry called the decision a "good show" and that Moscow had not blocked UN efforts to open a humanitarian channel that would allow food to be shipped out of Ukrainian ports.
